My fella loves reading and loves to jump, play, and run.
So what’s a momma to do for a birthday party theme? Combine them, of course!
Set up like a scavenger hunt activity with task cards, this activity gets hearts pumping in a cooperative and fun manner. The activities are geared towards ages 2-8, but older children will have fun helping younger ones.
This ABC party activity focuses on movement, letter and color recognition, pre-reading skills, cooperation, gross motor, fine motor, and following directions.
ABC Activity Party Setup
We held this party outdoors and set up all the activities in my parents’ backyard and deck. (Thanks, Mom and Dad!) Each activity was set up like a station with any equipment needed and enough space to complete the activity. Most of the activities can be done with normal play equipment or household items and just need a little space.
Twenty-six activities might sound like a lot, but we included different fruits and healthier snacks to represent some of the letters.
The activities range from very fitness-oriented (“jump rope or jump over the rope for 10 seconds”) to fine motor (“Play your own song on the xylophone for 10 seconds”) to social (“Sign ‘friend’ to a friend!”).
We paired the kids up (usually an older kid or parent paired with a preschooler) and each pair received an activity task card.
After a few simple directions, the kids got started! Because the preschoolers were all paired with older partners, the kids could each go to whichever station they wanted to in whatever order. (If you were using this activity with a very large group or a classroom, I’d suggest rotating every minute or so or having a specific direction to travel.) I set a 20-minute time limit for the activities, but most of the kids wanted to finish their cards! (Yay!)
Our son has special needs and communicates primarily through sign language. Incorporating signs into our activity helped his friends learn ways to communicate with him, while reinforcing learning principles and physical activity. He loved having his friends come up to him and show him the signs they just learned!
Download the ABC Activity Birthday Party packet!
In this download, you will find:
- an instruction sheet,
- activity summary and equipment list,
- one set of 26 alphabet letter cards (13 pages). Each card has a letter, alphabet sign, and associated activity.
- a second set of 26 alphabet letter cards (13 pages). This set does not have an activity underneath each sign. This allows you to write in your own activities as needed or wanted! You can print out only this set and create all your own activities, or you can print out just the letters you need. (For example: If you want to change the letter “L” activity, print the “L” card from the second set and write your own activity in!)
- ABC party task cards (2 pages).
*The equipment list can be modified if you change the activities!
Other Uses for the ABC Activity Birthday Party Packet
This activity can also be modified to be a large group/classroom physical activity or a sign language and movement game for homeschool!
I include a second set of blank alphabet sign cards in this packet. That means you can print out that blank set and:
- write your own activities in,
- use them as blank flashcards to teach fingerspelling,
- write sight words or sentences on each flashcard for reading practice,
- and more!
I have also included various modifications for equipment, groups, and special needs.
As a bonus, I’m throwing a sale at my Teachers-pay-Teachers store! The “ABC Activity Birthday Party” packet is 20% off from today through Saturday, July 6th! (That’s the highest sale I can throw at Teachers-pay-Teachers!)
